Sports Speaker Billie Jean King has had a positive impact on thousands of people over the past few decades, advocating equality and social justice. In fact, her determination opened many doors for both men and women in and out of sports. In 2014, she founded the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative to promote inclusion and equality in the workplace.
As one of the best tennis players in history, Billie Jean King won 39 major tennis titles, including 12 Grand Slam. In 1970, she signed a $1 contract to create the Virginia Slims Series. This equal rights movement opened doors for other women who wanted to become professional tennis players. It also led to the creation of the Women’s Tennis Association.
Speaker Billie Jean King rose to prominence as a tennis player after defeating Bobby Riggs in a globally televised match in 1973. In 2020, BNP Paribas renamed the Fed Cup the Billie Jean King Cup. Two years later, Billie Jean obtained the French Legion of Honour. In 2021, Knopf published the book ALL IN: An Autobiography to tell the story of how Billie Jean King’s strength and determination positively transformed women’s tennis.
Life included her in their “100 Most Important Americans of the 20th Century” list. Furthermore, Billie received several awards, such as the Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali Legacy Award.
