    Joan Laporta Speaker Biography

Joan Laporta is considered the best president in the history of FC Barcelona, one of the best football teams of all time. Joan is widely regarded as the architect behind a revolution that led the club from a very bad situation to becoming the #1. During his tenure, the club won two UEFA Champions League; four Spanish leagues; a FIFA Club World Cup; a UEFA Super Cup; a Spanish Copa del Rey and three Spanish Super Cups. A trophy list only within the reach of very few presidents.

Laporta is also a prestigious lawyer (graduated from the University of Barcelona) who runs his own company, Laporta & Arbós, a combined practice of lawyers and economists, formed by professionals with experience in the world of business and civil service, whose mission is to provide companies with a truly integrated service. In his political aspect, Joan Laporta became elected member of the Catalan regional parliament and municipal councilor of the Barcelona city council.

The first great decision and success of Joan Laporta was hiring of Frank Rijkaard as the new coach of the club. Personal friend of Johan Cruyff, football legend who revolutionized the way in which this sport is played, Laporta was clear from the beginning that the club had to return to the “Cruyffism” style. His model, named by him as the “virtuous circle” was followed by one of the best hires in the history of the club with Ronaldinho, who became the best footballer in the world while playing for FC Barcelona.

Another of Laporta’s great decisions as president took place on the 2006-2007 season, when he signed an agreement with UNICEF to be the sponsor of the players’ jerseys. But following FC Barcelona’s philosophy of “més que un club” (being more than a club), Laporta was a world pioneer and instead of selling the sponsorship to international brands for a lot of money, UNICEF would advertise on t-shirts for free and on top of that FC Barcelona would donate to them. The strategy helped to strengthen the “Barça” brand worldwide and received praise from all over the planet.

In 2008, Joan Laporta made one of the best decisions in the history of the club: the hiring of Josep ‘Pep’ Guardiola as coach of the first team. The meteoric rise of Pep Guardiola as the best coach in the world started that same campaign, when he led FC Barcelona to win all the titles he played that year. Thanks to the leadership in the field of superstars like Leo Messi, Xavi Hernández, Andrés Iniesta, Carles Puyol and many others, the dream Treble was achieved: King’s Cup, Spanish League and UEFA Champions League. But his legend had only begun, and in his next campaign he achieved what no other club has yet achieved in history: the perfect season. Guardiola added the Spanish Super Cup, the European Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup to the FC Barcelona trophy showcase, achieving the perfect year with an impressive 6 out of 6 possible titles as coach.

In addition to the successes in football, Laporta’s mandate was also characterized by bringing all the other professional disciplines of FC Barcelona to the top. In basketball, the club won a Euroleague; 2 ACB leagues; 2 Copa del Rey and 2 ACB Super Cups. In handball, the club won 1 ASOBAL League; 4 Cups of the King; 1 ASOBAL Cup; 2 Spanish Super Cups and 1 European Cup. In hockey, the club won 7 OK Leagues; 2 Cups of the King; 4 Super Cups of Spain; 5 European Cups; 4 Continental Cups; 1 Cers Cup and 2 Intercontinental Cups. In total, 59 titles during his presidency. And if this were not enough, he laid the foundations of the professional futsal team, which shortly after his term began to win titles as well.

In the economic and social areas, the club’s annual budget increased from € 170 million to € 445 million, while membership increased from 100,000 members to almost 175,000. Impressive numbers that also exemplify the magnificent work that Laporta and his board of directors did for the club. For all this, many club members constantly ask for his return as President.

    Joan Laporta Keynote Topics

In this fascinating keynote speech, Joan Laporta, the best president in the history of FC Barcelona - one of the most important football clubs in the world - will talk about his "Virtuous Circle" model that led the club to the top of football, winning all possible titles in a single year, while the club's economy multiplied its turnover and the mass of members almost doubled. And all this in just two short terms. The management success model of Laporta and its board can be replicated in other companies and organizations in difficult situations to obtain great results.

In the middle of his term, having already won a UEFA Champions League, Joan Laporta had to make a difficult decision: sack Frank Rijkaard and hire the then little known and inexperienced at the first level, Pep Guardiola. That crucial decision, not backed by public opinion, was Laporta's greatest success. Pep took in first year as an elite coach the club to sport's history, winning the 6 possible titles in a perfect season. In this motivational keynote speech, Joan Laporta will remember those crucial moments and the decision-making that led FC Barcelona to become the best team ever in the history of soccer.
