Political speaker Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo is one of the most thought-provoking political voices in contemporary Spain: a historian, journalist, and parliamentarian who has built her career at the crossroads of politics, ideas, and public debate. Known for her intellectual rigor and rhetorical force, she has become a prominent defender of liberal democracy and constitutional values in the face of populism, nationalism, and identity politics.
Born in Madrid in 1974, she studied at the University of Oxford under the renowned British Hispanist Sir John H. Elliott, earning her BA and D.Phil. in History. Her doctoral research on Spain and the Americas in the seventeenth century was later published by Oxford University Press. She first reached a wide audience as a journalist and longtime newspaper columnist, recognized for her incisive political analysis and her interviews with leading global thinkers, including Steven Pinker, Jordan Peterson, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and Álvaro Uribe, as well as for her reporting from difficult settings such as Venezuela.
Her influence deepened in the political arena. She has represented both Madrid and Barcelona in Spain’s Congress of Deputies and served as spokesperson for the Partido Popular in Congress from 2019 to 2020. Her parliamentary speeches, many of which went viral across Spain and Latin America, and her defense of Enlightenment values built a following well beyond party lines. In 2014 she co-founded the civic platform Libres e Iguales, playing a central role in mobilizing citizens around constitutional equality.
Today she serves as Director of International Relations at FAES, one of Spain’s leading think tanks, and holds senior parliamentary roles, including deputy spokesperson for her group and spokesperson on the Constitutional Committee. A self-described “Amazon feminist” who champions individual liberty over identity-based collectivism, she set out her political philosophy in the bestselling memoir Políticamente Indeseable. Her work has been recognized with distinctions such as Oxford’s Gibbs Prize for History and Spain’s Civil Society Prize for Civics.
As a speaker, Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo brings clarity, conviction, and intellectual depth to the stage. She helps senior audiences make sense of the forces reshaping democratic life, from populism and polarization to the crisis of traditional parties and the battle over public truth. Drawing on history, journalism, and frontline political experience, she challenges audiences to think rigorously and defend the institutions that sustain free societies, leaving them informed, provoked, and energized.
How populist movements challenge democratic institutions, and the principles needed to strengthen liberal democracy in turbulent times.
The rise of misinformation and emotional narratives, and how post-truth politics distorts public debate and erodes civic trust.
The causes of the crisis facing traditional parties, and a roadmap for renewing leadership, ideas, and democratic engagement.
Why open debate and viewpoint diversity matter, and how societies can defend free speech against polarization and cancellation.
