He started playing as a defender in Barcelona and was later moved to the senior squad at age 20. While playing in the 1990s Barça Dream Team, he contributed to winning several titles. These include 4 Spain Super cups, 6 La Liga titles, 1 UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup, 1 European Cup, and 2 UEFA Super Cups. In total, Pep made 479 appearances for the team over the course of 12 seasons. At the time, he was defined as one of the best defensive midfielders.
